Tax Investigation

Cara Cepat Hamil - National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said Wednesday he was privy to flaws in the investigation into a case involving Rp 25 billion (US$ 2.75 million) in a tax officer’s bank account, while Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji, the whistle blower on the case, was declared a suspect for defamation against his peers.

Among the flaws, Bambang said, was that police had not taken the main suspect, tax officer Gayus Tambunan, into custody.

“I was monitoring [this case] and wondered why investigators had not taken Gayus into custody,” Bambang told a press conference.

Bambang said detectives had also failed to investigate the alleged sources of the Rp 25 billion, including Robertus Santonius, a tax consultant, and a staff member of PT Megah Jaya Citra Garmindo.
Records show that both wired Rp 395 million to Gayus.

However, police said only Rp 395 million of the Rp 25 billion could be related to money laundering.
A team of detectives is investigating Roberto and another possible suspect identified as Andi Kosasih.
Gayus said Andi was a garment businessman from Batam who gave him Rp 24.6 billion to buy property in Jakarta.

Police later found that Andi was paid more than Rp 1 billion to claim he was the owner of the Rp 24.6 billion, National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Edward Aritonang said.

Bambang said he would provide investigators from the National Police Commission and Judicial Corruption Eradication Task Force with open access to information.

The investigation had been exclusively conducted by police.

Earlier, former chief detective Susno told the media the police’s investigation into the Rp 25 billion tax fraud case had been halted without proper reasoning, and that several officers had taken bribes.

Susno said, among others, Brig. Gen. Raja Erizmand and Brig. Gen. Edmon Ilyas had tampered with the investigation.

Both subsequently reported Susno to the National Police for defamation, and by Wednesday Susno had already been named a suspect, Edward said.

One of Susno’s lawyers said his client had received threats in the last couple of weeks.
